Learning, one stitch at a time

Sometimes learning starts wtih a pair of knitting needles.

For more than four years, one of our Mercy Works Connect volunteers has been giving her time each week during the school year to support primary school students with their learning.

During the morning, she works alongside students in the classroom, helping with reading, spelling, writing and maths. After lunch, the knitting needles come out.

Every two weeks, she teaches a different student to knit. It’s a chance to learn something new while developing fine motor skills, concentration and perseverance. At the end of their two weeks, each child gets to take home something they have made themselves, like this little knitted bunny.

It’s a simple activity that gives children another way to learn, practise new skills and build confidence.

Mercy Works Connect works with schools and community organisations to support children, young people and adults from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. Our trained volunteers provide learning support and mentoring, helping people develop their skills, confidence and independence.

For our volunteers, it can also be a rewarding way to share their own skills and interests with others.
